Textual analysis of music videos - Bruno Mars - Grenade

Mise-en-scene

The song is about a very negative topic, as it shows Bruno Mars trying to get a girl to like him. There are also lots of negative connotations throughout the video.

For example, there are several clips of homeless people. This connotes negativity and depression as they are also struggling in life, and in the video, Mars is struggling too as his journey to the females house is tough and demanding, like the life of a homeless person.

The scene where he is being threatened by the gang also connotes negativity as he is in a very bad situation, which is simultaneous to his personal life in the video as he is very upset. He has no control over the situation as he is massively outnumbered, which is the same with the girl, as he can have no control over the way she feels.

In several shots when Mars is sitting down inside a room, we can see rain pouring outside, through one of the windows. The rain has connotations of depression and darkness, as he is also sitting in a dark room, which also connotes depression and darkness. The represents his emotions and feelings towards the female, as he knows he cannot be with her.

Sound

Most of the sound in the song is non-diegetic, as the music for the song was made and edited in, however there are several diegetic sounds that can be heard within the video.

The first one is the sound of a van's horn, when Mars is walking through the tunnel, the van is warning him to move, but he doesn't take any notice of him.

The second diegetic sound we hear in the video is the dog barking at him when the gang are talking to him. This is an intimidating sound and it is used at with the gang to make the scene look more intimidating to the audience, as the gang are not heard. Like the van noise, Mars pays no attention to it.

The last diegetic sound we hear is at the very end of the song, when he is playing the piano on the train track. We can hear the noise of the train's engine, and then the train's horn blaring out to warn Mars it is coming, but again, he takes no notice.

All the situations where diegetic sound is used are frightening situations to be in, yet because Mars is so upset in the first place, he isn't scared and isn't bothered about them, which shows how upset he is and how in love he is with the female in the video.

Camera angles

Most of the shots used in this music video are close ups or mid shots of Mars. These are used in order to show his facial and bodily expressions to the audience, so they can see how upset he is and how much he wants female to like him.

The close ups work especially well because during the video, Mars comes across some tough obstacles and situations, and the camera always shows a close up of his face during these moments, so the audience can see how he is reacting.

The mid shots work well too as they are frequently shown when he is pulling the piano. They are used during these moments because it connotes struggle. Pulling the piano is a big struggle, and this is the same as the task he is trying to achieve, which is to win the female back and make her love him like he loves her.

Narrative

The story line starts with Mars sitting in a room just thinking about the girl he loves and how he can try and make her love him. He then decides to pull a piano to her door and sing to her in order to do this. On his way he experiences dangerous situations, like almost being run over and threatened by a gang. Despite these things happening, he pursues his journey to the girls house, but when he gets there, he sees another man with her in the window. He then goes to sit on a train track and wait for a train to come along, which he will not move out of the way for.

The things he does in the video in order to get the girl to love him shows the audience how much he is in love with the girl, as the lyrics and visuals link, because he would literally do anything to get her, which he does in the video.

Titling

Titles are not used in this video, which is good because there was not really any appropriate space for the titles to go, and it might have made the video not look as good if they were put in there just for the sake of it.z
