Textual analysis of music videos (in class) - Plan B - Writings On The Wall

This is an analysis of the song When The Sun Goes Down, by the Arctic Monkeys. We had to evaluate the narrative, representation, visual codes and audience.

We did this analysis so we could see what was good and what was bad about the video, and how it could help and effect us when it comes to making our own music videos. We looked at them as templates for our own, so we could use what we liked, and change what we didn't.

Narrative

Story line?

The main story line is Strickland Banks (Played by Plan B) goes to perform at a local theatre/bar. His wife stays at home cooking him dinner, expecting him to come home after performing. This however does not happen, as he stays out afterwards and has a one night stand with another woman. The wife then finds out and becomes very upset and wants to split up with Banks.

Themes?
  • 70s
  • love
  • trust
Recognition of Todorov's theory?

Three elements of Todorov's theory are used, which are equilibrium, as at the beginning of the video, everything is normal, there is then disruption, as Banks decides to stay with another woman instead of his wife, and there is recognition as the wife soon finds out about what happened.

Recognisable characters?

  • Strickland Banks
  • Banks' wife
  • the woman Banks has a one night stand with
How does the video reflect the lyrics?

The main link between the video and the lyrics is the title of the song, which is 'Writings On The Wall'. This links to the video because the title is portraying the same message that the video is, which is that the relationship between Banks and his wife is not over, but is is very negative and it is not a very strong relationship.

Representation

What issues of representation are shown?

The main representation shown in this video is gender, and it is shown in a very stereotypical way.

How have they been represented?

Gender is represented very stereotypically in this video as the woman is the person who has to stay at home doing all the cooking, which is one of the biggest stereotypes, and also every shot of her is shown in the kitchen in their house.

It is also stereotypical as the male is the one who is committing adultery, which again is quite stereotypical as in a lot of films and programmes, the males do this a lot more than the females.

Visual codes

Where is it set? connotations?

It is set in a kitchen, which connotes a homely feeling, and that the woman is the loyal one in the relationship as she is staying there cooking dinner for Banks, who is out performing.

It is also set in a nightclub, which connotes alcohol and lots of women, which is not very sophisticated. This connotes adultery as alcohol often provokes bad things to happen.

Colours used?

In all the scenes at the house, mainly bright colours are used. This connotes a positive attitude, and it shows that the woman is happy in the relationship, however the colours used in the nightclub scenes are mainly dark colours, which connotes negativity as dark colours are seen as dull and not very nice, and following the scenes in the nightclub, something very bad happens.

Audience

Target audience?
  • people in a serious relationship
  • teenagers
  • early 20s
How does it target this specific audience?

It targets this specific audience, especially the people in relationships by showing real life problems that unfortunately occur a lot more often than they should, and it works well because it shows them just how easy bad things can happen.

Demographics?

  • E
  • D
