Textual analysis of music videos - Chipmunk ft. Chris Brown - Champion

Mise-en-scene

The song 'Champion' is about working hard, to make sure you succeed later on in life, no matter what your background/childhood was like. There are several things in the video that connote this.

The first thing is the open space which the video is set in. There is nothing there at all, just a field, which symbolises that they had nothing when they were kids. This is a very clever way of showing this to the audience as the field is being used along with a helicopter, so it is showing the audience what they had in the past, and what they have now in the same shot without actually telling the audience.

The second thing is the use of the helicopter. The helicopter is used in the 'Champion' video in order to show the audience that although their childhood was rough and it was not very promising, they have worked hard and can now afford to buy things like that.

Another thing used to connote wealth is the usage of the Lamborghini. Like the helicopter, it is showing you what they have achieved from working hard in life and that if they can do it, anybody can if they really want to. Also like the helicopter, it is used in the open field, which connotes poorness, but by placing the Lamborghini in there, it shows the audience what they have achieved and compared to how little they had.

Sound

All the sound used in this music video is non-diegetic. I think it sounds good but in my opinion it would have been better if we heard some diegetic sound also, for example the noises of the helicopter and Lamborghini's engines. This would have emphasized the fact that they were there and it would have made the audience pay more attention to the fact that they are there, especially the helicopter as it is shown in the same scenes as the artists, so people might not pay any attention to it, whereas the Lamborghini was in its own scene.

Camera

Several shots are used throughout the video, and they are used very cleverly. For example long shots, close ups and mid shots.  The long shots make the artists look very isolated as they are alone in a big open area. This connotes loneliness, which refers to their youths as they both had very rough childhoods.

The close up shot is used a lot too, in order for the audience to see the artists facial expressions. The expressions of the artists are not happy at all, they are very serious. This is telling the audience how serious the song and message is, that everybody needs to work hard to succeed.

Narrative

The narrative of the music video is that even if you have nothing as a child, or a very rough childhood, you can still succeed later on in life. This song is very appropriate for the narrative as the two artists are examples of this.

It starts by showing the empty field, which connotes nothingness and lack of wealth, but then by adding the helicopter and the Lamborghini, which connotes wealth, it shows the audience what they have achieved.

Titling

The only titles used in this video are at the very beginning of the video. It says 'Colin Tilley Presents' on one shot, then on the following shot it says 'Chipmunk x Chris Brown' with the artists behind it, and finally on the shot after that it says 'Champion'. Tilley often uses titles at the beginning of the music videos he produces, and it has become his trademark, to let people know he made the video and to get himself more recognised.
